03Under the yard

Plan the whole yard once. Build it in the right order.

The parts you never see decide how a yard holds up. So we plan those first, even if you build in stages.

One yard in section, from the house wall to the last bed. Each number is a layer, in the order we build it.

    Water and grade

Where the rain goes, and how the ground slopes away from the house.

  2. 02

    Walls and structure

Footings and walls that hold the slope, with drainage behind them.

  3. 03

    Gas, power and water lines

Run under the future patio, so nothing gets dug up later.

  4. 04

    Patios, decks and pool surrounds

Set on a packed base and sloped so water runs off.

  5. 05

    Planting and finishing

Plants, drip lines and lights go in last.

05The site visit

What happens at your site visit

  1. 01

    We listen first

Our lead contractor comes to your home and walks the yard with you. Most of the visit is listening: how you use the yard now, what bothers you about it, and what you want it to do.

  2. 02

    We read the yard

Then we look at what shapes the plan, explain what we would do and why, and tell you if part of your wish list does not fit the yard, and what would work instead.

  3. 03

You leave knowing the next step

You leave knowing what the yard needs and what happens next. We give you a date for your written proposal at the visit.

  4. 4Sprinklers and utilitiesWhat runs under the yard, before anyone digs.
  5. 5TreesRoots and canopy to plan around.
  6. 6Sun and shadeWhere the afternoon sun lands, and where it does not.

What your written proposal covers

  • The work, area by area

Each part of the yard on its own line, so you can see what is planned where.

  • What is included, and what could change it

Written down before the work starts, not explained later.

  • Changes in writing, approved by you

If something needs to change during the work, we write it up and you approve it first.

Two clients on their backyard buildHomeowners talk about their hillside backyard, in their own words.

We hired Ace Design & Build for a full backyard remodel that included a new pool and outdoor kitchen, and we couldn't be happier with the result. They completely transformed the space and did a great job with the layout and overall design. ... We've already gotten so much use out of the backyard and it feels like we have a whole new space to enjoy.

Ace Design & Build completely transformed our backyard in Brentwood. We had them install new pavers, update the landscaping and plants, and rework the entire outdoor space. The difference is incredible, it went from outdated to a beautiful extension of our home. ... We love the finished space and have been spending so much more time outside.
Aleeza H.Brentwood · Google review
They also talked us into built-in bench seating along the edges, which sounded like a minor detail at the time but has become one of our favorite parts of the whole thing. ... Clean site every evening, no drama, no delays. The deck has completely changed how we spend our weekends. We're outside constantly now.
